Five Reasons Your Church Needs a Readiness Assessment

By Jeff Cluxton

Most will agree that a Readiness Assessment / Feasibility Study is one of the important first steps in assuring a successful Capital Stewardship Program.

The benefits of a Readiness Assessment are numerous. Your church receives valuable feedback on the plan before you start a campaign and solicit pledges.

Members of your congregation or parish are engaged in a thoughtful evaluation of the needs for a proposed Capital Stewardship Campaign. It creates an opportunity to test the leadership of your church to assure unanimity.

The Readiness Assessment also creates an opportunity to take the case to the people in a clear and concise manner.

Church Building Co. Prospers in God's Economy

The current economy has shut down many a builder's dream. But imagine this -- a church construction firm that's doubling its business.

Prayer and Study

During feasibility studies, a number of things surface and are set into motion. For example, the congregation's thoughts regarding the presented vision are heard.

As a result, some of the presented plans might be tweaked. Others may be left behind.

In addition, church participants are challenged to begin thinking about sacrificing additional resources of time, talents, and money to assist with a potential capital stewardship campaign. Some church members are enthusiastic and excited about giving more.

Is Your Church in Debt?

The number of congregations around the United States with significant debt is growing every day. To say it is reaching epidemic proportions is not an overstatement. Years ago, most prospective clients called regarding the need to raise funds for new construction, renovation and property acquisition. Today, most calls discuss the need to reduce debt. The reasons they are in debt are many. Some have used a line of credit to pay for deferred maintenance issues; some have construction loans; others purchased property for future expansion that is now on hold.

There are two paths that church leaders should consider:

  • Focus more attention on the Annual Campaign
  • Educate your congregation about the debt and conduct a focused and intense Capital Campaign

Klote & Associates Ranked #1 out of the 25 Largest Church Capital Campaign Companies

A recent study of over 1,000 churches across the United States who had recently completed capital campaigns revealed that seemingly subtle differences in the ways various churches approached their campaigns yielded startling and significantly different campaign results. The study conducted in June-July, 2010 by Volkart May & Associates, a Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota-based marketing and market research firm, set out to discover:

  1. Does professional counsel make a difference and, if so, is there a difference in results between firms that take a more advisory versus assistance oriented approach?
  2. Does how you reach out to people and ask for gifts make a difference in results?
  3. Which firm or approaches consistently get the best results?
